2. Estimated times

Times are based on typical words-per-minute (WPM) speeds. For most purposes, the “average” rows are a good guide.

Reading time
Slow (150 wpm)
Average (200 wpm)
Fast (250 wpm)
Speaking time
Slow (100 wpm)
Average (130 wpm)
Fast (160 wpm)

How this tool works

Reading and speaking times are rough guides based on common averages. They are useful for:

  • estimating how long an article or blog post will take to read
  • planning the length of talks, videos, and podcasts
  • checking whether scripts fit a time slot (e.g. 3, 5, or 10 minutes)
What word-per-minute (WPM) speeds are used?

For reading, the tool uses 150, 200, and 250 words per minute for slow, average, and fast readers. For speaking, it uses 100, 130, and 160 words per minute. These ranges are widely used as sensible ballpark figures for English text.

Why are my real results slightly different?

Real-world reading and speaking speeds depend on content difficulty, audience, pauses, and style. This estimator ignores those subtleties to give you a simple, fast approximation that works well for planning and comparison.

Can I use this for presentations or videos?

Yes. Many people use a speaking speed of around 120–130 words per minute for clear presentations. You can use the “average” speaking time as a guide, and rehearse once or twice to fine-tune your pace.
